1. DEHISCENCE

Dehiscence is a Toronto-based multimedia artist whose artworks are visual anthropological explorations of the human experience. Her main subject matter is the human form. Her artistic process stems from a desire to transcend the prejudices and stereotypes associated with our external physical traits. Her art encourages discussion around racial, gender, and sexual biases and provides an opportunity for reflection on the importance of humans taking responsibility for their place on Earth. Dehiscence started her artistic path when she was 46 (2017). She undertook her NFT journey in March 2020 and began exhibiting widely at international exhibitions throughout North America and Europe.

Dehiscence´s work is available on KnownOrigin, Objkt.com and Foundation.

Dehiscence´s quotes:

“I started using art as teaching materials for patients. I would teach them about their bodies and then I got into a few exhibitions, published a couple of times and it just took off. It was in 2018 when I discovered the ArtBreader. I liked the idea of being able to modify genes. But it was not working for me with what I wanted AI to be doing.”

“I was accepted into an art residency called Perfection Speculation which was a multidisciplinary investigation into the meanings and ethics of genetic technologies. The residency was postponed because of Covid, then proceeded in the summer of 2021 and had two hubs, one in Oslo for the EU artists and one in the UK, London,England for those of us who cannot travel to Oslo. Because of the need for the two hubs, we decided as a group to go to the digital route. It was at that point when I started to move away from collage and digital painting and more into using AI as an artistic tool.”

“As I studied gene editing technology for the residency and also that combined with my interest in medical technology, I realized I wanted to learn to use technology to modify the human body artistically”.

“Now I mostly use Stable Diffusion for still images and Disco Diffusion for animations with an occasional jump into Midjourney. And I either use one of my artworks as an initial image and I do a postediting or both.”

“I think it is a good way to build relationships is to do collaborations with other artists. When I entered the space, I never thought in a million years that I would enjoy collaborating as much as I do.”

“I am just as thankful for someone who collects my work as I am for someone who just retweets and says it is cool.”

“As a collagist, I would spend a lot of time finding source materials, editing them, printing, gluing, cutting, and if I made a mistake, that was it. But with AI you can make 50 mistakes in a row along with 50 amazing images. Having this ability to create with ease- I can do it on my phone, I can do it on my iPad, I can do it wherever I like and everyone can do it — that is the thing! It is opening up the world of art to everybody. And I think it is fabulous.”

“I used to work in healthcare and I thought people would appreciate my anatomical art. But I come to find out, a lot of people do not. It is too gory for them or too dark or something which makes me make darker art despite that.”

“When AI is not great at hands I never fix hands. I think, I am going to leave it as it is because this is the way it would be if I actually drew it. The hands would look funky. They would look like anything but hands”.

2. DELTASAUCE

Using similiar process as sculpting to take a piece of art, and change its composition into something new. His art explores themes of nostalgia and the emotions that certain spaces can evoke in the viewer, while using lighting and tonality to set the mood of his works. DeltaSauce’s work has been exhibited internationally in cities such as Rome, London, and NYC. DeltaSauce´s artwork is inspired by his time growing up in Florida in the 1990s and early 2000s.

DeltaSauce´s quotes:

“I do not put people in my work because I want to resonate with people ´s memories and for the viewer to put themselves in the image instead of having the person in the image.”

“You can get overwhelmed by the amount of stuff you can make. I think most of the AI artists at the beginning will have many collections with different styles until they figure out what they want to do.”

“The transformative properties of AI to turn an abstract image into a person fascinates me. Transform that person you have made from the abstract form into a building or a house or throw anything at the canvas amazes me.”

“You can use AI for anything. I have seen people transforming the traditional work they have spent hours on and digitally enhancing it with AI. A person with a creative background is going to do it a lot better than someone who is starting out in art.”

“I take a lot of inspiration for my work from the books I have read. I have started to experiment with new words in the dictionary that I have never even used in real life. Just to see what AI does. I like to see what the AI thinks of certain words like I will use Klingon, Japanese, and Greek. I will use whatever language to see what sticks and what I can utilize in my images. Wordsmithing to me is crafting a prompt that is original that other people will not craft ever.”

“I am at the point where I am trying to manage social media, marketing, talking to collectors, and everything else and I barely have time for art anymore. As you grow in the space, you slowly start to lose the time for your passion. Utilizing the AI tools to help you with those processes and having an assistant like this is going to be priceless.”

“I love editing my work. I love taking my work from MidJourney, putting it in Stable Diffusion and then having it run through and then going in a post process and fixing it up, layer in some elements that I want to use from other works”.

“Every month you get a new tool. Every month you get a new data set. You never going to be able to catch up with AI.”

“In the future, we are going to see a lot of indie projects by one person utilizing AI to its extreme. If you are on your own and you want to make something out of passion, you use the tools you can and build what you want.”

“At the end of the day anyone can make a good image, but if you can make a beautiful image with a meaning and intent, then that is going to make this piece priceless.”

“The artist is more valuable than the art. It is how you carry yourself and respect what you do.”
